- 1Open the Caughman-Harman funeral-home hub
The page includes a Recent Obituaries search field and links to the funeral-home locations.

Dignity Memorial’s obituary system also supports state and publication-date filtering.
- 3Use the chapel-specific search when useful
Lexington, Chapin and West Columbia each have location-linked obituary search routes.
- 4Open the full memorial
Do not stop at the short result card. The full page can contain service times, venue addresses, photos, donations and remembrance tools.
- 5Confirm “In the Care Of”
This identifies which Caughman-Harman chapel is handling the memorial.
- 6Read each service entry
Visitation, funeral, reception and burial can have different locations.
- 7Save the official memorial URL
Send relatives the live link rather than a screenshot that may become outdated.
- 8Recheck before travel
For an upcoming event, reopen the memorial and confirm the address one more time.
After opening: enter first or last name → adjust date/state filters if needed → open the person’s memorial → verify “In the Care Of” → review upcoming or past service entries.

What Recent 2026 Memorials Show About Service Routing
These dated examples are included to explain how Caughman-Harman memorials are structured. They are not intended as a permanent list of recent deaths.
Visitation was at Lexington Chapel, while the funeral was held the next day at Convent Baptist Church in Leesville. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Lesson: three stages, two separate destinations.
The funeral service was scheduled at Lexington Chapel, followed later by a private graveside service in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
Lesson: burial can occur in another state and on another schedule.
The published service was a graveside service at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lexington rather than a funeral-home event.
Lesson: the chapel address may not be needed at all.
The same routing issue appears in the site’s Haysi Funeral Home obituary guide, where funeral-home and cemetery events often need to be recorded separately.

If a Death Has Just Occurred
All three current location pages state that families can call for immediate help. The exact first medical or legal step depends on where and how the death occurred, but after the deceased can be released, the funeral provider can coordinate transfer and arrangements.
- 1Follow the medical or legal notification process
A hospital, hospice, nursing facility and unattended home death may each follow different procedures.
- 2Choose the correct Caughman-Harman chapel
Use family instructions, prearrangements or the community connection rather than guessing.
- 3Call the chapel
Lexington: (803) 359-6118; Chapin: (803) 345-3500; West Columbia: (803) 755-3527.
- 4Ask what information to prepare
Request guidance on identity information, Veteran documents, cemetery arrangements, obituary details and insurance.
- 5Ask for a current written estimate
Do not rely only on online “starting at” prices when making final arrangements.
For a more detailed first-hours checklist, the Hazel Green Funeral Home obituary guide covers immediate-need preparation step by step.
Appointments, Virtual Planning and Preplanning
The current page offers appointment requests and says arrangements may be completed by phone or email, including electronic signatures.
The current page offers pre-planning appointments and a contact form. It also states that immediate assistance is available by phone.
Families can request an appointment for funeral or cemetery planning. The cemetery planning system offers location, in-home and video-consultation options.
Caughman-Harman Prices: What Is Public and What Requires a Quote
The Dignity Memorial location pages provide pricing tools, but current burial and cremation service totals depend on selections and often require a custom quote. The pages state that service prices can exclude items such as caskets, urns, cremation containers, cemetery property, cemetery services, taxes, state fees and death certificates.
Current location pages route users to View Pricing or Get Custom Quote rather than presenting one permanent all-in funeral total.
The current West Columbia costs page lists burial/cremation cemetery property starting at $2,195.
This is cemetery property pricing, not the total funeral cost.
The current West Columbia costs page lists Celebration of Life venues starting at $1,495.
Selections and additional services can change the total.
| Ask about | Question to ask | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Basic services | What is the current basic services of funeral director and staff fee? | This is different from merchandise and cemetery property. |
| Burial | Which viewing, chapel, hearse, graveside and cemetery charges apply to our plan? | Funeral-home and cemetery charges may be separate. |
| Cremation | What are the current direct-cremation and cremation-with-memorial options? | Memorial service and visitation can be additional costs. |
| Cemetery property | Is the quoted cemetery price for the property only, or does it include opening/closing and memorialization? | A “starting at” property amount is not necessarily the final burial total. |
| Cash advances | Which death certificates, clergy, flowers, permits or other costs are paid to outside parties? | Third-party charges can increase the final total. |
Use the FTC guide to understand telephone price-information rights and the General Price List rules that apply when arranging funeral services.
South Carolina Death Certificates: Current Fees & Ordering Options
South Carolina Department of Public Health handles certified death certificates. The correct record is based on where the death occurred—not simply which funeral home handled arrangements.
| Ordering method | Current state fee | Current guidance |
|---|---|---|
| In person | $17 expedited search fee, including one certified copy; $3 for each additional copy. | DPH lists an average in-person processing time of about 30–45 minutes for routine requests; same-day service is a goal but not guaranteed. |
| By mail | $12 standard nonrefundable search fee, including one certified copy; $3 each additional copy. | DPH currently lists an average processing time of about four weeks. |
| Online vendor | $17 state expedited search fee plus vendor processing and possible shipping fees. | DPH states that only an immediate family member may use its approved online vendor route for a death certificate. |
| By phone | $17 state search fee plus VitalChek service and shipping charges where applicable. | Only immediate family members may use the phone ordering route. |

Phone: (803) 898-3630
State-listed office hours: 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Useful statewide rule
South Carolina DPH says its Vital Records offices can issue death certificates from any South Carolina county for the records available through the statewide system.
The death-certificate application requires valid identification.
Choose online, phone, in-person, mail or drop-off → check who may order → prepare ID → confirm current fee → submit through the official or approved-vendor route.
Lexington County Probate: When It Applies After a Funeral
The funeral home can help with funeral paperwork, but it does not appoint a personal representative or give someone legal control of an estate. For a person who was permanently living in Lexington County at death, Lexington County Probate Court handles estate administration.
Lexington County Probate Court
205 East Main Street, Suite 134
Lexington, SC 29072
Phone: (803) 785-8324
Hours: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday.
Small-estate route
The county publishes an Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property route for qualifying estates with no real estate and personal property within its published small-estate threshold.
A mandatory 30-day waiting period from the date of death applies before Form 420ES can be filed.
After opening: answer the county’s threshold questions → choose the full-estate or qualifying small-estate route → download the required form → gather the certified death certificate and Will if one exists → confirm filing fees before submitting.
For another detailed obituary-to-government-task workflow, see the John P. Franklin Funeral Home obituary guide.
South Carolina Funeral License & Complaint Resources
The South Carolina Board of Funeral Service regulates funeral directors, embalmers, apprentices, funeral establishments and crematory operators.
Use the South Carolina Labor, Licensing and Regulation funeral-service pages when you need to verify regulatory information about a funeral professional or establishment.
The Board investigates complaints and may take disciplinary action when appropriate. Keep contracts, receipts, written estimates and relevant communications if a genuine regulatory concern arises.
After opening: use Licensure for credential information → select How to File a Complaint for a regulatory concern → follow the Board’s current submission instructions.
Social Security & Veteran Family Tasks
Ask the funeral director whether the death is being reported to Social Security. An obituary does not itself start a survivor-benefit application.
SSA: When Someone DiesEligible families may need the Veteran’s discharge papers when applying for military honors, burial in a national cemetery, a burial flag, headstone or marker, memorial certificate or burial allowance.
