Caughman-Harman Funeral Home Obituaries: Search, Chapel Locations, Maps & Family Help

Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes currently operates three Lexington County-area chapels: Lexington Chapel, Chapin Chapel and West Columbia Chapel. Obituaries are published through the Dignity Memorial system, where users can search by name and open individual memorials for service information, photos, memories, flowers and other family-approved details.

This guide shows which chapel to use, what to do after opening the obituary search, how to avoid driving to the wrong church or cemetery, where Southland Memorial Gardens fits, how current pricing works, where to obtain a South Carolina death certificate and when Lexington County Probate Court may be relevant.

Chapin Chapel 123 Columbia Ave.
Chapin, SC 29036
(803) 345-3500 Historic Stoudemire Home converted to a funeral chapel. Current official pages identify this location as serving the Chapin / lake-area community.

Do not choose a chapel only from the person’s residence. A Gilbert, Irmo, Cayce, Columbia, Pelion or other Midlands resident may be served by any of these locations. The individual memorial’s “In the Care Of” line is the better clue.

What Recent 2026 Memorials Show About Service Routing

These dated examples are included to explain how Caughman-Harman memorials are structured. They are not intended as a permanent list of recent deaths.

Henry Gunter — June 2026

Visitation was at Lexington Chapel, while the funeral was held the next day at Convent Baptist Church in Leesville. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Lesson: three stages, two separate destinations.

Bernice Hunter — August 2026

The funeral service was scheduled at Lexington Chapel, followed later by a private graveside service in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon, West Virginia.

Lesson: burial can occur in another state and on another schedule.

Margaret Sox — August 2026

The published service was a graveside service at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lexington rather than a funeral-home event.

Lesson: the chapel address may not be needed at all.

The same routing issue appears in the site’s Haysi Funeral Home obituary guide, where funeral-home and cemetery events often need to be recorded separately.

Before You Attend a Caughman-Harman Service

VisitationRecord its exact starting/ending time and venue.
Funeral / chapel serviceConfirm whether it is at Lexington, Chapin, West Columbia or a church.
ReceptionSome memorials identify a reception following the service; check the location.
BurialSave the cemetery separately even when a funeral is held at a Caughman-Harman chapel.
West Columbia can simplify some services. Because West Columbia Chapel is on the grounds of Southland Memorial Gardens, a funeral and cemetery service may occur on the same property—but confirm that the specific memorial actually names Southland before assuming this.

For another page built around checking the exact official location before acting, see the Keefe Funeral Home obituary guide.

If a Death Has Just Occurred

All three current location pages state that families can call for immediate help. The exact first medical or legal step depends on where and how the death occurred, but after the deceased can be released, the funeral provider can coordinate transfer and arrangements.

  1. 1
Follow the medical or legal notification process

A hospital, hospice, nursing facility and unattended home death may each follow different procedures.

  2. 2
    Choose the correct Caughman-Harman chapel

Use family instructions, prearrangements or the community connection rather than guessing.

  3. 3
    Call the chapel

    Lexington: (803) 359-6118; Chapin: (803) 345-3500; West Columbia: (803) 755-3527.

  4. 4
    Ask what information to prepare

Request guidance on identity information, Veteran documents, cemetery arrangements, obituary details and insurance.

  5. 5
Ask for a current written estimate

Do not rely only on online “starting at” prices when making final arrangements.

For a more detailed first-hours checklist, the Hazel Green Funeral Home obituary guide covers immediate-need preparation step by step.

Chapin

The current page offers pre-planning appointments and a contact form. It also states that immediate assistance is available by phone.

West Columbia

Families can request an appointment for funeral or cemetery planning. The cemetery planning system offers location, in-home and video-consultation options.

Appointment availability is live information. Do not publish a fixed appointment date or promise a specific callback time as permanent information. Use the official scheduling interface or call the location.

Caughman-Harman Prices: What Is Public and What Requires a Quote

The Dignity Memorial location pages provide pricing tools, but current burial and cremation service totals depend on selections and often require a custom quote. The pages state that service prices can exclude items such as caskets, urns, cremation containers, cemetery property, cemetery services, taxes, state fees and death certificates.

Burial / cremation service

Current location pages route users to View Pricing or Get Custom Quote rather than presenting one permanent all-in funeral total.

West Columbia cemetery property

The current West Columbia costs page lists burial/cremation cemetery property starting at $2,195.

This is cemetery property pricing, not the total funeral cost.

Celebration-of-Life venue

The current West Columbia costs page lists Celebration of Life venues starting at $1,495.

Selections and additional services can change the total.

Ask about Question to ask Why
Basic services What is the current basic services of funeral director and staff fee? This is different from merchandise and cemetery property.
Burial Which viewing, chapel, hearse, graveside and cemetery charges apply to our plan? Funeral-home and cemetery charges may be separate.
Cremation What are the current direct-cremation and cremation-with-memorial options? Memorial service and visitation can be additional costs.
Cemetery property Is the quoted cemetery price for the property only, or does it include opening/closing and memorialization? A “starting at” property amount is not necessarily the final burial total.
Cash advances Which death certificates, clergy, flowers, permits or other costs are paid to outside parties? Third-party charges can increase the final total.
Federal Funeral Rule

Use the FTC guide to understand telephone price-information rights and the General Price List rules that apply when arranging funeral services.

South Carolina Death Certificates: Current Fees & Ordering Options

South Carolina Department of Public Health handles certified death certificates. The correct record is based on where the death occurred—not simply which funeral home handled arrangements.

Ordering method Current state fee Current guidance
In person $17 expedited search fee, including one certified copy; $3 for each additional copy. DPH lists an average in-person processing time of about 30–45 minutes for routine requests; same-day service is a goal but not guaranteed.
By mail $12 standard nonrefundable search fee, including one certified copy; $3 each additional copy. DPH currently lists an average processing time of about four weeks.
Online vendor $17 state expedited search fee plus vendor processing and possible shipping fees. DPH states that only an immediate family member may use its approved online vendor route for a death certificate.
By phone $17 state search fee plus VitalChek service and shipping charges where applicable. Only immediate family members may use the phone ordering route.

Useful statewide rule

South Carolina DPH says its Vital Records offices can issue death certificates from any South Carolina county for the records available through the statewide system.

The death-certificate application requires valid identification.

Lexington County Probate: When It Applies After a Funeral

The funeral home can help with funeral paperwork, but it does not appoint a personal representative or give someone legal control of an estate. For a person who was permanently living in Lexington County at death, Lexington County Probate Court handles estate administration.

Lexington County Probate Court

205 East Main Street, Suite 134
Lexington, SC 29072

Phone: (803) 785-8324

Hours: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday.

Small-estate route

The county publishes an Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property route for qualifying estates with no real estate and personal property within its published small-estate threshold.

A mandatory 30-day waiting period from the date of death applies before Form 420ES can be filed.

The funeral home’s county does not decide probate jurisdiction. If the deceased permanently lived outside Lexington County, contact the probate authority for the correct county or state instead.
Lexington County Estate Administration

After opening: answer the county’s threshold questions → choose the full-estate or qualifying small-estate route → download the required form → gather the certified death certificate and Will if one exists → confirm filing fees before submitting.

Social Security & Veteran Family Tasks

Social Security

Ask the funeral director whether the death is being reported to Social Security. An obituary does not itself start a survivor-benefit application.

SSA: When Someone Dies
Veteran burial benefits

Eligible families may need the Veteran’s discharge papers when applying for military honors, burial in a national cemetery, a burial flag, headstone or marker, memorial certificate or burial allowance.
